Can’t Draw a Sheep? Finding God’s Everlasting Love in the Mess

Have you ever felt like your spiritual life needed to be a masterpiece? Maybe you’ve sat down with your Bible and a beautiful new journal, only to feel a wave of "perfectionist paralysis" because you aren't sure where to start—or worse, you’re afraid you’ll make a mess of the pages.

If that’s you, I want to let you in on a little secret from my recent creative reflection on Matthew 18: I can’t actually draw a sheep.

During my latest session, I was using watercolors and collage to reflect on the Parable of the Lost Sheep. As I struggled to get the shape of that little lost lamb just right, I realized something profound. God wasn’t looking for a perfect illustration. He was looking for me.

Moving from "Striving" to "Sitting"

For 30 years as a speech therapist, I have helped people find their voices. But in my own life, there was a season where everything felt like it was falling apart. I was the one picking up the pieces for everyone else until I finally told God, "I can’t do this".

In that quiet, tear-soaked space, He gave me a simple invitation: "Come and create with Me".

I realized that when we slow our bodies down to paint, doodle, or collage, our nervous systems finally feel safe enough to quiet the noise. In that stillness, we move from striving—trying to get the Bible study "right"—to sitting on our Father’s lap and just being.

The Message in the Mess

I remember painting what looked like a bruise—just shades of grey, pink, and purple. I told Him, "God, this just looks like a mess". He whispered back, "I'm going to turn your mess into a message".

In Matthew 18, we see a Shepherd who leaves the ninety-nine to find the one who is lost. He doesn't wait for the sheep to look "perfect" or find its own way back. He goes into the mess to bring the sheep home.

Whether you are using a £2 pen or professional watercolors, the goal isn't the art. The goal is the presence. Your faith and creativity are meant to flow together to restore you, not drain you.

Try This 10-Minute Rhythm

If you are feeling weary or spiritually dry, I invite you to try a Spirit-Led Sketch:

  1. Breathe: Take a moment to just be still.

  2. Ask: "Father, what do you want to show me about your love today?"

  3. Doodle: Don't worry about the "sheep." Just move your pen or brush as you listen.

  4. Rest: Know that you are already loved, already creative, and already enough.

A Gentle Invitation

doodle with God

If you’re struggling to feel loved by God…
If anxiety has been weighing heavily on your heart…
If prayer feels hard or lonely…

Please know this:

You are not too much for God.
Your worries are not a burden to Him.
He cares — deeply.

If you’d like a gentle way to explore this kind of creative prayer for yourself, I’ve created a simple experience called Doodle with God.

It’s a quiet, creative space to sit with God, reflect on Scripture, and let your heart breathe again.
It’s currently $7, and I’m not sure how long it will stay at that price.

Hi, I'm Bev

I’m Bev — a former speech therapist of 30+ years who spent her career helping others find their voice. Along the way, I discovered that creativity is one of the most powerful ways to find clarity, healing, and purpose with God.

What began as personal art journaling during seasons of grief and burnout has grown into a creative faith space where women reconnect with God, themselves, and what truly matters.

Hi there, I'm Bev Jessup

Bev was brought up in a Catholic home, where her parents instilled in her a deep faith and reverence for God. Growing up, she attended church regularly and participated in various religious activities. However, when she went to university, her world was turned upside down. Her friends started talking about having a personal relationship with Jesus, and Bev was confused. She had never heard of such a thing, and she didn't know what it meant.

Determined to find answers, Bev began to explore the Christian faith further. She read books, attended Bible studies, and talked to her friends about their experiences. Eventually, she came to understand what it meant to have a personal relationship with Jesus, and she made a commitment to follow Him.

This decision changed Bev's life forever. She experienced a sense of peace and purpose that she had never felt before. She began to see the world through a new lens, one that was filled with hope and joy.

As she continued to grow in her faith, Bev met her future husband at university, and they fell in love. They got married in 1992 and started a family. Bev and her husband have three adorable sons, whom they love and cherish.

Today, Bev and her family live on the Isle of Wight in the UK. She spends her days painting, journaling, spending time with family, walking, and traveling. But above all else, she continues to follow Jesus and share His love with those around her.

Bev's story is one of courage and determination. Despite the confusion and uncertainty she faced, she never gave up on her search for truth. And when she found it, she embraced it with all her heart. Her commitment to Jesus has transformed her life and the lives of those around her.

My mission is to empower women to embrace their creativity and use it as a tool for spiritual and personal growth. Through my work, I aim to inspire women to discover their true potential and overcome any challenges they may face on their journey.
