Welcome to this week’s blog from Creativity Released

If you’ve ever felt spiritually off-track or creatively stuck, this one’s for you. Today we’re diving into the idea of creating a sacred space for worship, prayer, and creativity—even if all you have is a box, a bag, or a quiet corner.

Not Pinterest-Perfect (And That’s Okay)

When people hear "sacred space," they often think of Pinterest-worthy craft rooms with color-coded shelves and sunshine pouring in through a picture-perfect window. But my first creative space? It was a small corner by a window. Nothing fancy. But something holy began to grow there because I kept showing up.

Some days I lit a candle, opened my journal, and whispered a prayer. Other days, I cried, scribbled verses, or just tore paper and glued it down.

That corner became a place of rest, presence, and sacred rhythm.

(I’ll do a separate blog and episode soon to show you my actual craft room—it’s a bit of a mess right now, so it needs some love and tidying before I let you in!)

Sacred Space in a Box (Literally)

You don’t need a room—you just need a container. One of my go-to solutions is a decorated shoebox. It’s covered in wallpaper (yes, just a sample I picked up for free!) and filled with:

  • A pencil case of pens, washi tape, and tiny verse cards

  • A glue stick, scissors, and a few scraps of napkin collage paper

  • A candle gifted by my son

  • A little ramekin of water for painting

  • A cotton-paged journal I picked up from the National Gallery

  • Post-it notes, a lighter, and a small watercolour palette

It all fits neatly, and I can take it out into the garden, to the park, or by the sea. Wherever I go, that box brings peace.

Sacred Space in a Bag

Every Sunday, I take a colourful fabric bag to church. Inside? My art journaling sermon notes, an old sketchbook from The Works, my Intense pencils, a pouch filled with Posca pens, paintbrushes, and a travel-sized palette. I even bring collage paper and fabric scraps—just in case the sermon turns into a moment of inspiration (which it often does!).

Here are a few of the pages I created in that space:

  • A journaling page about grief and overwhelm

  • A face covered in verses about strength and boldness

  • Waves and a boat with the words: “Let go and let God.”

That art came from a place of deep emotion—from the waves of grief I felt after the verdict in my niece’s 10-year-long hospital case. She was a beautiful artist herself, and her memory still inspires me to create.

Why Sacred Space Matters

In the chaos of life, sacred space brings:

  • Intention – It reminds you to show up.

  • Tools – It makes it easy to create without rummaging.

  • Invitation – It welcomes you to pause and be present.

Whether it's a tray, a tote bag, or a tiny corner of your living room—what matters most is that it’s yours, and it brings you closer to God.

Create Yours

Here’s what I recommend to get started:

  • Start small. Grab a shoebox or bag.

  • Add tools that speak to your spirit (your favourite pen, a candle, scissors, Scripture cards).

  • Make it visually inviting. Use colours or textures you love.

God doesn’t need perfection. He just wants you to be available.

Hi, I'm Bev

I’m Bev — a former speech therapist of 30+ years who spent her career helping others find their voice. Along the way, I discovered that creativity is one of the most powerful ways to find clarity, healing, and purpose with God.

What began as personal art journaling during seasons of grief and burnout has grown into a creative faith space where women reconnect with God, themselves, and what truly matters.

Hi there, I'm Bev Jessup

Bev was brought up in a Catholic home, where her parents instilled in her a deep faith and reverence for God. Growing up, she attended church regularly and participated in various religious activities. However, when she went to university, her world was turned upside down. Her friends started talking about having a personal relationship with Jesus, and Bev was confused. She had never heard of such a thing, and she didn't know what it meant.

Determined to find answers, Bev began to explore the Christian faith further. She read books, attended Bible studies, and talked to her friends about their experiences. Eventually, she came to understand what it meant to have a personal relationship with Jesus, and she made a commitment to follow Him.

This decision changed Bev's life forever. She experienced a sense of peace and purpose that she had never felt before. She began to see the world through a new lens, one that was filled with hope and joy.

As she continued to grow in her faith, Bev met her future husband at university, and they fell in love. They got married in 1992 and started a family. Bev and her husband have three adorable sons, whom they love and cherish.

Today, Bev and her family live on the Isle of Wight in the UK. She spends her days painting, journaling, spending time with family, walking, and traveling. But above all else, she continues to follow Jesus and share His love with those around her.

Bev's story is one of courage and determination. Despite the confusion and uncertainty she faced, she never gave up on her search for truth. And when she found it, she embraced it with all her heart. Her commitment to Jesus has transformed her life and the lives of those around her.

My mission is to empower women to embrace their creativity and use it as a tool for spiritual and personal growth. Through my work, I aim to inspire women to discover their true potential and overcome any challenges they may face on their journey.
