When You Skip Quiet Time With God (and How Art Journaling Can Gently Lead You Back)
Two Days. That’s All It Took.
The Subtle Slippage of Skipping Quiet Time
Just two days of skipping my quiet time with God, and I felt like I was completely off track.
I had a chest infection. I was tired. I’d just started a new job that demanded my attention first thing in the morning. And in the shuffle of getting up and getting going... I didn’t just forget to spend time with God. I chose not to make the time.
I kept telling myself it was just temporary. Just until I felt better. Just until work settled. But by the end of that second day, the signs of disconnection were everywhere.
The Fruit of Disconnection
When Our Roots Pull Away from the Vine
I was tired—but not just physically. I was spiritually unanchored. Mentally foggy. Emotionally withdrawn.
Even the relationships closest to me felt strained. I was impatient. Snappy. Less generous with my time and attention.
Why It Affects Everything
Spiritual Disconnection Has a Ripple Effect
I’ve come to realise that our spiritual life isn’t a separate part of us—it influences everything:
💥 My physical energy depletes faster.
💭 My mental space feels cluttered and anxious.
🎯 My motivation and purpose start to fade.
“Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine.” – John 15:4
When God Calls You Back
An Invitation, Not a Guilt Trip
The enemy whispers, “You’re behind now. You’ve messed up.”
But the Spirit gently says, “Come as you are. Start where you are. Just be with Me.”
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning.” – Lamentations 3:22-23
That’s the invitation I heard on the third morning. Not a shame-filled command—but a gentle call back to peace.
How I Return to God: Art Journaling
Why Creativity Connects Me Back to the Creator
Art journaling isn’t about being a skilled artist or producing something “worthy” of social media. It’s about slowing down. Being present. Creating space for God to speak.
Some days it’s watercolours. Other days it’s scraps of paper, a scribbled verse, or a messy prayer.
“Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets…” – Habakkuk 2:2
The movement of my hands, the colours, the process—it helps my heart open again.
A Whisper in the Paint
What I Heard in the Quiet
As I sat with my journal, Psalm 46:10 came to mind:
“Be still and know that I am God.”
Not perform. Not strive. Not push through.
Just be still.
In the stillness, I felt clarity return. Not lightning-bolt clarity—but a quiet knowing that I am seen, held, loved.
Creativity Is a Spiritual Practice
A Sacred Way to Be Present
We often forget—creativity is sacred.
It brings us into the present. It softens us. It connects us to the One who first created.
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” – Genesis 1:1
When we engage in art, we’re stepping into the creative nature of God Himself.
5 Gentle Ways to Rebuild Your Quiet Time With God Through Art
Create a sacred space
A quiet corner with your Bible, art journal, and supplies. Keep it simple and peaceful.Start small
One verse. One colour. One honest prayer.Reflect, don’t perform
This is not for Instagram. It’s your soul on paper.Invite God in
Whisper: “Lord, meet me here.”Let it unfold
Don’t force anything. Even a quiet session is a spiritual one.
“Draw near to God and he will draw near to you.” – James 4:8
My Challenge to You
If it’s been a while since your last quiet time with God, let this be your nudge.
Don’t wait for energy, motivation, or the “right” time.
Just begin.
Pick up your pen. Smudge a little paint. Write a verse. Doodle a prayer. Let your heart speak.

A Gentle Space to Reconnect With God
I created the Creative Sanctuary membership to help women like you reconnect with God through art, journaling, and reflection.
It’s gentle. It's real. It's a place to exhale and begin again.
Final Thoughts
Skipping quiet time doesn’t make you a bad Christian.
It makes you human.
But the beauty of our faith is this:
“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end.” – Lamentations 3:22
So today, just pause.
Be still.
And begin again—with a paintbrush, a prayer, or a simple word: Help.
